Captain America didn’t have it easy this time. Not really. The 2026 World Cup was a bruising campaign for Christian Pulisic, in every sense of the word. He started with a calf strain. Reported back in June. Since then, he managed only one assist in four matches. Then came the heartbreak against Belgium on Monday. A 4-1 blowout in the Round of 16. Pulisic walked off with a bone bruise. Plus a microfracture in his lower leg. Right below the knee, where the tibia meets the fibula.
The Aftermath Was Ugly
He tried to play it cool. Told the press he twisted his ankle. Sprained it, actually.
“I just twisted my ankle and sprain by ankle. It’s just frustrated to end like that of course but now I get time to rest so hopefully it’ll be OK.”
That line was dynamite. For the critics, at least. Pulisic was the face of the squad. Now he’s in a storm. Carli Lloyd, two-time women’s World Cup winner, wasn’t impressed. She called her disappointment with him out on X. Attached his quote with a response of her own: “You rest when your playing career is done. Period.”
Landon Donovan agreed. Well. He went harder. On his podcast “Unfiltered” he claimed people inside US Soccer are fed up. His sponsors, teammates, coaches. They hate how things are handled around Pulisic. Donovan got gritty. Said he would have been dragged off the field if it came to it. Explicitly so. You get the point.
How It Went Wrong
Minute 52. The US trailed 2-1. Hope was still alive. Pulisic shot from just outside the box. Bad news. His foot connected with the calf of Belgian midfielder Youri Tielemants. It was a shin kick. Essentially. His ankle and knee twisted. He dropped. Got back up. Looked wrong. Limped. Pain was visible. Coach Mauricio Pochettino made the call. Pulled him. Subbed in Sebastian Berhalter seven minutes later. Soon after, keeper Matt Freese fumbled. Belgium scored the third goal. Game over.
The Damage Report
A bone bruise. Sounds harmless. It’s not. Trauma damages the tiny blood vessels feeding the bone. Fluid pools. Inflammation hits. Pain, swelling, stiffness. You treat it with RICE. Rest, Ice, Compression, Elevation. Not rice. As in Asian cuisine. Heals in weeks or months. Depends.
The microfracture. A hairline crack. Micro means small. Like a microscope. Or Micropachycephalosaurus. A tiny dinosaur. Or a microthong. Point is, it’s a crack. Usually no surgery unless the bone shards move. Or other tissues rip. RICE again. Maybe some physical therapy. He can’t walk on it much. Pulisic is slated for an August return. Just in time for AC Milan versus Torino.
Recovery And Resentment
He’ll get better. Probably fully. Long term? No impact. Months pass, leg heals. But the World Cup? That stings more. Second tournament marred by injury now. The physical hurt fades. The public scrutiny doesn’t. Criticism sticks. Adds salt to the wound. Pulisic has the body back. What about the morale?
That’s the question, isn’t it.
