Antibiotics are chemicals that stop bad bugs from growing or kill them outright. They do this without wrecking your own cells. Most of them work in dilute solutions. That means small amounts can make a big difference.

Before 1928, we didn’t have these tools. Then came penicillin. It changed everything. Suddenly, bacterial infections weren’t always death sentences. Fungal diseases also became treatable. Some other illnesses responded too.

These drugs come from nature mostly. Actinomycetes bacteria produce streptomycin and tetracycline. Other bacteria make bacitracin. Fungi give us penicillin. Chemists later tweaked these natural formulas. They created semisynthetic versions. Now we even have wholly synthetic ones.

Some antibiotics attack many different pathogens. These are broad-spectrum. Others hit just one type or class. These are specific. Each has its place.

But there is a cost. These drugs don’t always pick targets wisely. They can kill good microbes in your gut. That often leads to diarrhea. Allergies are another risk. And the biggest worry is resistance. Bugs adapt. They become drug-resistant strains. Then the antibiotics stop working.

The discovery of penicillin revolutionized medicine. But the price of convenience is resistance.

We need to understand how antibiotics work. We also need to know when not to use them. Overuse speeds up resistance. Underuse lets infections spread. The balance is tricky.

Where do these drugs come from today? Mostly labs and factories. The sources are still microbial. But the production is industrialized. That makes them widely available. Too widely available.

Which antibiotic is best for you? That depends on the bug. And your health history. And local resistance patterns. Doctors decide. Patients comply. Or they don’t. And that’s the problem.
